Asbestos is the Greek word for inextinguishable. This inexpensive fire-retardant material, thermal and acoustic insulator was used extensively in home construction from the early 1940s through the 1970s. However, we now know that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to lung disease. When disturbed, tiny abrasive asbestos fibers are easily inhaled, which damages lung tissue and can cause cancer. In homes built prior to 1975, asbestos is most commonly found as thermal insulation on broilers, pipes and popcorn ceilings. Unfortunately, it can also be found in other household materials including but not limited to: vinyl floor tiles, glue that attaches floor tiles to concrete or wood, some forms of linoleum, roofing, and plaster.
If Asbestos crumbles or has been sawed, scraped, or sanded into a powder is likely to release asbestos fibers and create a health hazard. If your home was built prior to 1977, it typically is only a $45 fee to have your affected area tested for asbestos. If you test positive, you must hire a professional HAZMAT team that is licensed and bonded to handle this situation. In some cases, in some geographical locations and dwelling types, a permit will be required.
From 1999 to 2013, the years for which data are currently available, we have estimated the number of deaths from asbestos exposure in the U.S. at 189,000 to 221,000 people, or 12,000 to 15,000 deaths a year. Those figures are based on a review of federal records of deaths from diseases caused exclusively by asbestos, plus a calculation using a formula developed by international cancer researchers to estimate the number of lung cancer deaths likely caused by asbestos. You could have asbestos lurking in your home right now! The fact is that over 30 billion dollars has been set aside in class action lawsuits that help to provide a monetary value to the cancers brought to these people. You don’t even have to go to court, you only need to prove that your cancer or other ailments are a product of asbestos exposure.
There are so many things in your home that are causing widespread cancer. Green Clean Life is dedicated to exposing these these toxic chemicals and their retail products so we can put an end to unnecessary disease.
